In the course of less then 30 days Pletcher captured the Rebel with Magnum Moon, Louisiana Derby with Noble Indy,Florida Derby with Audible, Wood Memorial with Vino Rosso, and yesterday the Arkansas Derby with Magnum Moon. One heck of a training job. Few notes, unless for a few defections Asmussen will be without a runner in the derby this year. Winstar ,China Horse Club Repole,(vested interest) have FIVE runners in this years derby (Audible,Justify,Noble Indy,Quip,Vino Rosso). Two runners will try to win with unbeaten records not having run as a two year old(Justify,Magnum Moon). Of the twenty runners seven where sired by either Curlin(3) Scat Daddy (2),Medaglia d'Oro. And finally, looking at what these three year olds brought at auction, this might be the costliest group ever to fill the gates.(only rags to riches story here would be Promises Fullfilled at $37,000).....

Great achievement but not that amazing given the resources he hasat his disposal. When the billionaires are joining together to scoop up all the best horses in the sales or buy any promising two year old that breaks their maiden it’s not surprising that you end up with a Derby field dominated by a few trainers. Certainly I don’t think it’s healthy for the sport at all .

Gooch, yes I missed him. Took a closer look and noticed his owner Monomoy Stables also has Monomoy Girl in the Oaks(one of the favorites). Total cost on both $120,000 with over a million banked so far. Bev, shows tho big bucks gets most of the pie, but there is still some for the other guys. (and yes, like the Funny Cides,Mine That Birds, and California Chromes(without the A-@#$% owner)......isn't it more fun going to the sales doing the due diligence with a set number then pretty much buying the talent and horse from a bottomless pocket. Think more gratification when results prove right.

Pretty sure Monomoy Stables is Sol Kumin who seems to own a percentage of a ton of good horses.

I used to track auction prices and I think in KY Derby there is always a shot of a rags to riches horse running ITM.
Not true for the Belmont though. The few years I was tracking that angle, seems like Belmont winners are somewhat higher dollar types at auction.

Sol Kumin has 50% of My Boy Jack,a majority share in Monomoy Girl and 15% of both Justify and Audible( Head Of Plains Partners)
Nice hand huh?
One of the Oaks favorites, the Derby favorite ,a live longshot My Boy Jack and Audible who could certainly hit the board with a clean trip.
