........and resulting stewards decision.......... ( somewhere along the way the phrase "life is not fair" hits a note here)
Velazquez Fined $1,500 for Wood Memorial Bumping
By T. D. Thornton
Vino Rosso (Curlin) survived an inquiry and an objection by a rival rider in capturing Saturday’s GII Wood Memorial S., but a subsequent stewards’ ruling has imposed a $1,500 fine on winning jockey John Velazquez for “careless riding.”
Closing on the outside, Vino Rosso appeared to be the aggressor when tightening up on rail-running Enticed (Medaglia d’Oro) and jockey Junior Alvarado, delivering two solid bumps in rapid succession approaching the final furlong of the Wood.
The stewards’ ruling described the reason for the fine as a “failure to make a proper effort to maintain a straight course with his mount.” Purse and pari-mutuel payouts are not affected.

I was surprised Rossa wasn't moved down but a few minutes later I realized this was NY and I've seen this at Fairmount and Cahokia Downs more times than want to remember over the decades. What I don't understand is why do this now? Admitting the jockey was guilty of the infraction, not once but 3 times, and not changing the results makes no sense. It just angers the players even more.

just watched the replay and if a foul happened it must have been a camera heads shot but 'i' noticed nothing in the strides of both that would suggest a foul was committed , lol...watching the strides of both not changing indicate to me that what ever bumping was going on was because they were side by side and a bit tired so that this happens in most races this way...nothing of a major change of direction except when the winner moved ahead and away....the third placed finisher and forth were moving at the end and may out run these two over a further distance...lol...both of these top two will not win the derby should they be in it...lol...

I wouldn't have been surprised had they taken the horse down, but I thought the decision was correct. The bumping did not seem to alter the outcome of the race as Vino Rosso was going by Enticed and appeared best. I believe that was the deciding factor in the decision.
