4 wins + 51 wins on Dam's side going back 3 generations = 55 wins (184 starts)
6 wins + 37 wins on Dam's side going back 3 generations = 43 wins (87 starts)

I've always been a sucker for these word puzzles that contain a trap I fail to see. However, without knowing how long he held the horse each time, or what his expenses might have been during the holding periods, I'd hazard to say that he made a net profit of $20 over the two transactions.
And I'd agree with Hoop about sending 4 mares to Mendelssohn

Essentially, the question becomes... would you rather have FOUR foals, each with a 30% chance of being a winner, or ONE foal with a 50% chance of winning?
Is that an appropriate restatement of the equation? A very interesting proposition.
...and yes, JolyB, you are correct! $20.
