Derby wrap up
Big crowd on a beautiful night for racing. People seemed to a have a good time. Lots of families.
Races went off safely other than a couple of gate scratches including Neighbor in the Derby itself. We have a rule here that if the horse goes off its feet and falls to the ground it must be scratched. That applies from the paddock to the start. Looked like both of the scratches threw pretty good wrecks in the gate but both walked off OK.
Handle for the 7 race card was $3.7M with half of that coming on the mandatory payout jackpot pick 5. The payoff for a $0.20 ticket was $1,137.90 which was quite a bit better than the parlay which I calculated out at $331. The $1 Pick 4 paid $796 which was also a little better than the parlay of $624.
The derby winner is owned by Henry Witt Jr. who runs a large stable based at Lone Star but he has had a big division up here with trainer Jerry Gourneau for a number of years. Mano Dura was claimed off of Steve Asmussen for US$50K and shipped up here with the Derby in mind. He beat older horses in his prep over the track on July 24. I assume that if he came out of last night's race OK he will be continuing on to the Canadian Derby in Edmonton on August 26. He certainly looked like he could run all day.
Heroic Move was disappointing although he ducked into the gap exiting the chute and seemed to take off on the rider after that. Our track is pretty deep and lots of shippers don't take to it very well.
I hope you enjoyed following along and thanks again to Dell for throwing in the contest.
