I have an opportunity to pick up 2 days as a pari-mutuel clerk
@ Fresno Fairgrounds Race Track on Saturday & Sunday... the pay is $100 per day - gasbuddy calculates round trip at $60 for the 4 hour 15 minute one way drive (243 miles). I have never been to the Fresno Fairgrounds race track - new adventure. I would drive tonight in the wee small hours and sleep in the car Saturday night - more adventure Permit pari-mutuel clerks need 15 work days before being accepted into the Union - I have two so far. I'll pick up a couple days @ Santa Anita during Breeders' Cup and another guaranteed day Dec. 26th. I have made inquiry about working the upcoming Del Mar Autumn meet - that could be a few more work days. Been a member of Screen Actors Guild (sag-aftra, Los Angeles local) for 28 years - I'm a Union Man. Been told it costs around $600 to join PMEG (pari-mutuel employees guild) - that's a lot, starting with nothing after divorce. My car seems to be running fine (bought for $1000 in Oklahoma), the vehicle that brought me home to California. Will cost some cash to eat... but I just got the check for the days I worked @ Santa Anita Park ($125 per day). Would be traveling in the rain... big thunder storm happening as I write this post - even more adventure. I figure I might come out $100 bucks ahead if I decide to get in the car and just do it... WHAT DO YOU THINK? The alternative is to stay closer to home and drive to Lake Arrowhead (60 miles one way) on Saturday to sing at a birthday party for an 80 year young lady (pay $40 and a chance to re-introduce myself for future gigs), then escort an old friend (she's 75 and doesn't get out much) to church on Sunday (pay = points in heaven). LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON THIS ONE! Dell.

My advice would have been....
Follow your gut feelings.
You only live once.
And after what you’ve already been through?

Do the track.. it’s something you love.. you may make new contacts that can lead to some kind of stability in the racing environment.. you never know!
...and it makes for a good read for guys that wake up early and read this board!
Good luck

I sold myself my own winning ticket on Quick Quick Quick in the 8th race at Keeneland today... also earned $50 in tips from happy customers. Fun day!!!
Now, it's back out to the parking lot for a good night's sleep... tuckered out.

Just getting caught up on this thread Dell, and I'm glad your first day at Fresno was memorable. I too have fond memories of Quick Quick Quick as he was my 5th straight top pick winner given out on the day after the Travers last year, the last time I saw you. That "cold" pick 5 at the Spa was decent at $757.00 for every 50 cents! I made a little score on him yesterday too but needed a couple more just like him to keep my head above water. Enjoy Day 2 at the fair and get home safe!

Is there a beach some where , where you can take a bath...lol...or are you going to stand in the rain and take a shower, lol...after all, going to work and not smelling right may cause a lot more time before you may join then Union...lol..and a bottle of good whiskey with fresh mints may also be help full....a girl that needs a ride in the future might help push your vehicle to the nearest garage and the company would also make the trip of more value, lol...etc...have a great trip...lol

In FResno, you are very close to Yosemite. You should go. Breathtaking beauty, and the best place I can think of to clear the mind.
