For handicapper like myself who has been in this game since 2003, WILD ON ICE winning got me baffled. If I was at the racetrack actually betting I would have have included #7 in an exotic bet. But I am still confused as to why this horse won the race with the caliber of Henry Q. Unless he was giving a doze of Viagra yes. LOL. I failed to see the credential this horse had previously to win this race. His PACE / SPEED was the lowest. His BEST PACE was also the lowest. And I've noticed this trend lately on these longshots but this one...I'm scratching my head

I've been seriously handicapping horseracing since 1980, and every once in a while you come away with a head scratcher like this. It makes you almost think all of your time studying this game was a complete waste. My wife tells me that if I had spent as much time doing something else versus looking at THE Racing Form, I would hold a P.H.D. She's right, I know it, but I would never tell her. But then, your favorite angle comes in at 25-1 and you are all over it......and suddenly you are a genius again. Frustrating, yes, exhilarating, yes.

I failed to see the credential this horse had previously to win this race. His PACE / SPEED was the lowest. His BEST PACE was also the lowest. And I've noticed this trend lately on these longshots but this one...I'm scratching my head Could just be inherited. There's always some *underlying reason* why a horse wins a race, who has "a little somethin" --- especially if the rest of the field doesn't lift a hoof. His broodmare sire dosage is 14-14-23-1-0. That's a chit-ton of Brilliant and Intermediate speed passed down from the mare side. And, sire, 2nd generation Tapit, more intermediate and classic speed. Then, you see that the Dam's side Wild Again----Who won the Breeders Cup Classic --- and won or placed in several other G1 and G2 races. Sometimes these horses are good but they don't have trainers who know how to properly campaign them. You can bet your boots that this horse, if given to Mott or Motion or somebody, we would have heard from before this. but they don't go to the right connections due to conformation problems, or other stuff like....this one was bred in TX. Not many horses bred in TX who ever make the Derby gate, though we do have Middleground (won the Belmont, the Hopeful and Ky Derby) and Assault (Assault won the Wood, the KY Derby, The Preakness, the Belmont and the Dwyer!) THey can come from anywhere. I don't think the horse is exactly chopped liver. He won his maiden, his allowance, and then 3rd to Henry Q........ .all at those 'high elevation tracks' where the oxygen is not very plentiful and you have to have a set of lungs and the right heart, metabolically, to race at. Those of us who are used to racing closer to ground level elevation have a hard time with races in these jurisdictions. As a matter of fact, I find the ones who come in from SA and elsewhere to be highly suspect, esp. if they haven't trained and worked at high elevation. Not many horses succeed when you put them into places like that......they are usually won by "locals" and Henry Q didn't bring it. Everyone else worked and trained at places NOT at those high elevations........

Pure craziness. Today I'm gonna use another strategy I learn at the BC with Gulfstream park. No PP's, just smart picks. I'll let you all know how I did.
