Day I âAnd theyâre off at Saratoga.â A total of 55 contestants went to the post with the aim of getting their hands on the much sought after Saratoga Cup Classic trophy for a year (or two years if your name is Ziggy). The aptly named Partsnut becomes the first winner of the âNumpty of the Dayâ award as he put a selection in after the 12 noon EST deadline. Itâs probably very azzedine of me being this critical of a newbie but sorry folks Iâve told you at least a million times that Tom does not allow late selections , not on his watch ! Intent on getting off to a flying start I studied the form very carefully in the opener but obviously I was a Bad Student ($13.60) as my selection didnât run a lick. Fittingly the last person to enter the contest , Elk, was the first contestant to have a winner when debutant Drynachan ($6.20) showed some city zip to give Chad Brown the first of surely many winners at the meet. Reading the rules may not be Partsnutâs Strong Side ($5.80) but this did not deter him from picking the winner of the third - subject to his entry being approved by our camp commander. Only four races in and my advice is donât bother looking at pps, the Dominant Strategy ($11.00) at the Spa is just to bet Chad Brownâs horses. He may have shorn his long flowing locks but the Assman also looks as strong as ever as Lyrical Lady ($15.80) hit the right note in the fifth which was music to the ears of Turffan. For most of us picking winners on Opening Day was like finding a needle in a Hay Field ($18.00) but SB West came up with a Giant Zinger ($10.40) in the seventh. Catherinethegreat ($8.40) proved to be no Moscow mule leading from gate to wire in the Schuylerville to earn a few rubles for TimS70Ar , Bitowisdom and BigRed1. SpiderJohn is back in the house and he made his first pick a winning one when Daddy is a Legend ($5.30) weaved his way to victory in the Lake George. As is customary the finale produced the highest priced winner of the day but none of us were sharp enough to land on Cape Angel ($21.40) Ps. Happy Birthday Gisele Bundchen â I hope you donât feel too deflated today ! .

Day II Its only the second day but already one contestant is driving me NUTS by constantly posting picks after the noon deadline. There is Always A Suspect ($16.20) every year but Seanow ($14.80) once you get one warning there should be No Dozing ($15.40) as I am sure GAM would agree. I may have to consult my War Cabinet ($7.60) of JolyB , TurfeyeJoe and DBLakers should this continue to happen. Hopefully everybody tomorrow will be able to Tee Up ($16.20) on time otherwise like Phlierfreak I might go Nitrous ($3.70) We may have to put a Call Provision ($5.30) to prevent further breaches of the rules (feel free to read them folks) but rest assured any late winning selections will not be counted. Back in the real world Battle Joined ($6.40) re-rallied in the closing stages to strike the bell for Nick Vito in the 8th race. The juveniles in the Sanford Stakes were all looking to chase greatness but once again it was a Todd Pletcher trainee Sombeyay ($7.40) who struck gold. Meanwhile SpiderJohn is still batting a thousand after SisterCharlie ($4.30) won the Diana by a hanging Chad. Almost the first big hit of the contest in the finale by Madame Blum and DBLakers but unfortunately for them their long shot Expected Ruler was overthrown by Jess I Am ($12.60) Ps. Happy Birthday Cat Stevens - I hope that Moon Shadow has stopped following you. .

Day III After the nuttiness of the first two days I have nothing but Pure Praise ($8.10) for everyone today although the Chocolate Kisses ($4.20) were only for BigRed1. Surprisingly none of us cashed La Moneda ($4.00) in the third not even The Red Dude ($15.20). The racing so far has left many dazed and confused but not GAM who struck again with Wooderson ($16.00) in the fifth. NickVito is also like butta at the moment and Bam Bam Blu ($7.90) added to his cache in the sixth. Meanwhile Madame Blum put on her heels and did the Ascot Walk ($19.00) up the leaderboard after the seventh. DavidBrown41 came loaded for war today and Guerriere ($9.90) was his only shot that counted in the 8th. Itâs often said that a winner is a winner no matter the price but no amount of coaching could encourage any of us to waste a valuable pick though on Monomoy Girl ($4.00) in the Oaks. In the finale we had lots of opportunities but not even DocSpa was able to Quaff ($18.00) a beer to celebrate Ps. Happy Birthday Alex Trebek, Iâll take Triple Crown Winners for $1000.

Day IV Rainy days and Mondays always get me down so you can imagine that I was not on top of the world this morning. Indeed after four losing picks I just wanted to say to our contest leader GAM , â I long to be , close to youâ . Still weâve only just begun and for all we know it could be yesterday once more if I can get some big winners and prize the coveted trophy from the cold hands of Ziggy. No luck in the opener for our group when Mantle struck out - barely managing a piece as Shanghai Schwartz ($10.20) was too red hot for this group of maiden claimers. New forum fan favorite Partsnut was all smiles (must have met Sadie) when Gabriella ($6.30) literally ran all over the track to beat a decimated field in the first of the off the turf races (try saying that quickly). In the third Jacckk8 finally found a Seam ($6.30) who was able to handal the slop in a race that was tailor made for him. In the fourth race Beetlebomb plunged new depths and his pick of Pipes was blocked as he emerged from his Dugout ($9.40) a mere two hours and twelve minutes after the noon selection deadline đ. All our selections for the fifth race were scratched which was won by Ekhtibaar ($3.60) which ironically is Arabic for âget your picks in on timeâ. It took a Calculated Risker ($8.10) for Cherokee Scot to finally get off the duck as the rain stopped and my day got a lot brighter in the sixth race. Boom boom boom !!! I didnât have a clue who would win the Caress but Propro, Onion and GAM all had a Ruby Notion ($56.50) that it would be a 27-1 longshot ridden by Florent Geroux ! Ladies and Gentlemen the bar has now been set and that bar is very high ! Our brief purple patch disappeared in the eighth race where despite multiple selections there was surprisingly no support from our Northern members for the Indigo Yankee($20.00) In the finale which was tarnished by the absence of Quietly Quick it was no surprise to find that Silencia ($10.60) proved to be golden. Ps. Happy Birthday Woody Harrelson - this is no country for old men (unlike this forum) !

Day V -Military Appreciation Day - Thank You For Your Service Here we go again on National Merry-Go-Round Day where a big crowd gathered at the Spa to watch the horses go round and round and round and round. Saratoga Springs is of course world famous for its water and it had no shortage of that earlier this week . Surprisingly all the races were still on the turf although it was No Wunder we had a scratch in the eventful opener where New Member ($11.80) overcame all sorts of hurdles to win. Unfortunately no forum member , either new or old picked him. Speaking of new members Partsnut is certainly making an impression on this contest (not for all the right reasons) and he chalked up another winner when the well versed Hexameter ($3.20) proved to be poetry in motion in the second. No ding dong battle in the third as Sport ($5.70) showed hustle and heart to win easily. He was wisely picked by PartsNut and WholeNut. Long time player JolyB has never won this contest and has a candid desire to rectify that this year. He may have a summer bourbon or two tonight to celebrate the success of Riff Raff ($6.30) who had enough class to dispatch a pretty poor group in the fourth. Bull Feathers was a popular choice in the fifth but our members were shouting âbullsh*t as it was Collegeville Girl ($20.80) who performed with distinction to graduate with honors. Come Dancing ($6.60) waltzed home in the sixth but could not find a partner from our group of hoofers. Almost a game changer for SBWest in the seventh but 44-1 shot Questeq came up just one step short behind English Dancer ($8.30) who was completely tapped out at the finish. Hezethebest came within seconds of being locked out today which would have been a royal blessing for him as Converge did not get it together leaving Morrison ($9.40) to get a winning van home. We have a surprising new leader in the Futility Stakes. Former champ Bobtailnag put his selection of Vertical Oak a mere two hours and fifty five minutes after the noon deadline. Heâs still a happy bunny though as his pick finished second to the hot favorite FinleysLuckyCharm ($3.90). No luck for our group in the finale as Moneigh Moproblems failed to make an impression as Four Knights ($7.90) ruled the landscape. Ps. Happy Birthday Geoffrey Zakarian, what you got cooking ?

Day VI Another wet morning at Saratoga resulting in many of the soaked patrons asking the manager of Ruby Tuesday at the nearby Wilton Mall to âgimme shelterâ. Still you canât always get what you want although some of us found the cancelation of the opening Steeplechase somewhat overwhelming. Wild horses however canât stop one of our group from posting multiple picks even if several of them had already scratched way before the noon deadline đ Remember folks I donât write the rules, I just read them and I would be a fool to cry if I fell foul of them. So we actually started the racing day with race two where Generalist ($6.90) went gravitating to the front and did not fade away which certainly made trainer Chad Brown sugar happy. I canât get no satisfaction that we had no selections in race three but it was pleasing to see the skies clear up and it turning into quite a Picture Day ($15.40) for legendary trainer Linda Rice. It was a fairy tale come true for the Bobtailnag in the fourth when La Fee Verte ($11.00) earned him some green to increase his fiduciary value and there was no need for any sympathy for the devil in the fifth when Brimstone ($5.00) fired home. Unfortunately for Badactor Quick Quick Quick was slow slow slow in the sixth sixth sixth where Alberobello made his world heritage status count. Jockey Joe Bravo showed that on a big muddy track it pays to be Fully Vested ($11.00) in the seventh but sadly none of us took his advice. Maumeeriverangler was looking for a Weekend Hideaway ($23.40) to do some fishing and now he can afford it after landing the big one. In the finale NDSC32 probably went through his 19th nervous breakdown waiting for the result of the stewards inquiry. Alas his Super Simple was DQâd leaving only those who bet on Guacamole ($6.30) to cash their chips. Ps. Happy Birthday Mick Jagger - 75 years old and still rocking and rolling.

Day VII Well itâs the seventh day of the contest and we are still getting members posting their selections after the noon deadline đ. As the old saying goes : âYou can lead a horse to water but you canât make him read the rules.â In the opener a sure fire winner always sounds good so forget the odds and just Bankit ($2.60). You never know , it might pay for a few beers and thatâs just what the doctor ordered at the Spa. What certainly would not pay for even one beer was the early daily double which paid a mere $1.30 after Radiant Beauty ($4.30) had the patrons shouting Rudy, Rudy , Rudy ( not the former mayor of NYC) in the second. The heavens opened prior to the third with rain of biblical proportions thereby answering the prayers of SB West who decided to Ride On Faith ($11.80) to propel him up the leaderboard. In the fourth Belgian looked more like Clouseau than Poirot when he came bumbling out of the gate and by the time he got going Shangroyal ($3.90) had long gone. Stoney Bennett ($9.00) may not have left his heart in San Francisco but he certainly left the field for dead as he busted out of the gate and never looked back in the fifth to the delight of PhlierFreak and Bitowisdom. By the sixth race Saratoga had turned into a mudsoon and unfortunately none of us were able to get Out of Trouble ($5.10). The seventh race was a Saida ($4.80) state of affairs for all bar SB West whose bankroll continues to go North. While the rest of us were wondering what the puck was going on , Phlierfreak was watching Flowers for Lisa ($11.20) come up roses for him in the eighth. You did not have to be Nicodemus to predict that Hofburg ($2.50) would win the Curlin but we could have all done with his help in the finale where Lady Vicki ($9.40) prevailed. Ps. Happy Birthday Bobby Gentry , no bridge jumping at Saratoga please.

Day VIII Finally made it to Saratoga late Saturday night after the long drive from Delaware Park where we had our tenth second place finisher of the year. Iâm not complaining though as I donât really like to get my picture taken. Catching up on the results of what for a Saturday at the Spa was a fairly lackluster card. Large Mac got his contest off to a frying start with the combo of St Louie Guy ($12.80) and Chris and Dave ($7.70) just what he ordered. Maumeeriverangler is angling to win the Cup at his first attempt and yet another winner in the books will surely Satisfy ($4.70) him. Biggest hit of the day however went to DBLakers who had the luck of the Irish in both selecting Absolutely Aiden ($17.80) and a betting on him. No big Promises Fulfilled ($5.50) on the card although SpiderJohn did give an Imperial Hint ($3.60) of what is to come by chalking up his third consecutive success of the contest. A dead heat in th Bowling Green Stakes but even with two winners of the race our group were left looking like spares after failing to make a strike. BigRed1 may not have increased his bankroll Tenfold ($5.50) in the feature but he is still in with a sporting chance which is fine and dandy with him . In the finale the much maligned stewards for once did not Reversethedecision ($5.90) enabling the too charming Joly B to cash out under his customary cloak of secrecy.

Ps. Happy Birthday Mick Jagger - 75 years old and still rocking and rolling. Didn't know it was Mick's 75th Birthday until the local (Pittsburgh) Indie station was playing Stones songs exclusively. After a few they mentioned the fact and the Stones marathon made sense. Not a bad way to pay tribute. Heard a few I had never heard before.

Day IX Not to belabor the point (well actually I will) but if you put in your picks after the 12 Noon EST deadline they will NOT count. PartsNut got screwed today when both Glossy and Uno Mas Modelo bolted home but his 12.02 posting meant that he missed out on a $38.30 pay out which would have put him near the top of the leaderboard. I guess he will need something stronger than one more beer tonight . Maybe a couple of bottles of Louâs Chardonnay ($8.30) might do the trick for him. Meanwhile for many of the rules followers it was a pretty pretty good day. Hezethebest and PedalCar have been doing Pooh in the contest so far but Love My Honey ($5.40) finally got them both a Winnie. At the other end of the spectrum GAM has made a sensational start and it seems will go to any Length ($28.40) to dominate this contest. The beers tonight are on Grommet though who was able to pull Uno Mas Modelo ($33.20) out of Docâs cooler. Maybe it was the one that PartsNut left đą Finally its possible that PhlierFreak and Jacckk8 will be going to the phone booth tonight to Colin a pizza order after Farrell (20.20) triumphed today . Iâve seen it happen before, but only in the movies đŹđ Ps Happy Birthday Bill Mott - nobody celebrates a birthday at Saratoga better than you .

Day X One quarter of the meet is already in the books and GAM is on pace for a record breaking contest total but there is a large group of contenders in the peloton chasing our runaway yellow jersey leader with the uphill stages still to come. Mondayâs card started with the rescheduled steeplechase which Propro gave us all a detailed run down on . However it was not a great personal start for him as the longest shot on the board Show Court ($30.20) was finally âable to make the move from novice to open successfully â. In the second I was thinking of claiming Sal the Turtle ($6.80) but like everyone else was put off by the very suspicious drop in class. Of course he romped home while putting up a 98 Beyer and probably wonât be running for a $12,500 tag again any time soon. đ¤Śââď¸ SpiderJohn continues to rack up the winners and is obviously in Battle Station ($7.00) mode for the rest of the contest. Newcomer Maumeeriverangler keeps reeling them in also although this time he needed a bit of Divine Interventio ($12.40). Elk also had that one then went Backtohisroots ($3.90) for a heavenly double. PhlierFreak remains in contention with High Promises ($10.80) of more to come. Badactor took center stage in a Broadway Run ($13.40) to get off the mark while Large Mac was seen at the take out window again after Special Relativity ($7.70) moved him into the top ten. Finally if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck , then it probably is contest host Ten Furlongs who is amazingly 0/18 in the contest so far and if he doesnât start hitting some winners soon his goose will be well and truly cooked. Ps Happy Birthday Arnold Schwarzenegger. Looking forward to you coming back.

Day XI The expected heavy rains did not materialize and fortunately all the turf races went off as planned . Having said that , it would be fair to say that most of us had a terrible day with little cause for celebration . There were however some rather notable exceptions. Trapshot showed who is the Boss Man ($7.90) in these parts by firing home the opener. Turf Eye Joe was also able to smile more when he doled out Banana Thief ($17.20). Meanwhile Phlier Freakâs reputation remains unsullied as he was able to Follow The Signs ($11.60) thanks to Your Love ($6.90) to track down the afore mentioned Banana Thief ($17.20 ) to increase the pressure on our current leader GAM. Finally a bit of wisdom for the day . If you want your picks to count get them in before the noon deadline. Even Sam the Bugler knows that ! ps Happy Birthday , Jerry Garcia . Hope your cake came with a cherry on top .

Day XII A rather quiet Thursday at the Spa with Archumybaby ($12.80) bustin hearts in the opener. Royal Heist ($7.20) stole the second but did not have any accomplices here. Chide Brown , as he is known in the forum because he was late with an entry once, dominated the third with Hizeem ($5.30) edging Frontier Market while DocSpa cashed in a Big Dollar Bill ($12.60) after a marathon effort in the fourth. No more excuses needed for Daring Prospect ($8.10) who was able to shake loose in the fifth to help erase some bad childhood memories for Bitowisdom. Meanwhile PhlierFreak edged closer to the vacationing GAM with the same pick. Bobtailnag might have missed out on the Pick 4 but he did land the Super Echo ($8.30) in the sixth which caused some currency chaos at the IRS window. Sentry ($7.30) went 5 Wide to take the seventh after acknowledging the futile shouts of âHerecomesyourmanâ from several of our members. Jacckk8 was determined to chalk up a winner today and tapped into Dream Pauline ($5.80) in the eighth. Finally Iâm fairly confident that none of our group hit either of the last two races but if they did Iâm sure đ will correct me đ

Day XIII Another wet day at soggy Saratoga saw most of our contestants keeping their powder dry for Whitney Day. Indeed we had to wait until the sixth race for our first winner when Maumeeriverangler was able to reel in Miss Mystique ($9.40).Bitowisdom also had that one and smartly doubled up with Proven Reserves ($8.30)in the eighth. SpiderJohn landed another winner with Raging Bull ($7.30) in the feature. Canâtweallgetalong was a popular choice in the finale and while winning the bob for third place made his owners happy only BigRed1 scored and moved into the top ten after securing the late double with Regalian ($3.60).

Day XIV An overnight / early morning deluge caused havoc at the Spa and it was definitely a case of âHouston we have a problem â for the stewards on Whitney day. As a result all races bar one were taken off the turf and the last two races were canceled in a move that turned out to be a very smart decision. Contest wise it was a much less dramatic day with a string of short price winners. Interestingly and as it turned out wisely , the leaders in the main decided to give the âcontest within a contestâ a miss leaving the backmarkers to try , mostly in vain , to use up their picks in a futile effort to make up some ground. The day started as it would continue with the favorite leaving only the Italian Stallion , Exulting. ($5.00) in the opener . Casa Creed ($15.60) turned out to be the longest shot of the day giving SB West , Thundergulch and BertConvy some much needed creedability. Meanwhile those gulloble enough to pick Rathnar Lothbrok ($14.40) included DavidBrown and Cruzan. It would be Hersh ($5.30) of me to criticize those selecting favorites like The Caretaker ($5.30) and Uni ($7.20) but they won and I struck out completely . Spare a thought for the Bobtailnag who drove his Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry but at least his pick Mucho ($6.70) while paying out very little did also get contest host Ten Furlongs finally off the duck. SeparationofPowers ($6.60) was a popular pick and all those who had him can take this as an acknowledgement of their bit of wisdom. Finally they say it pays to Diversify ( $5.20) and on this occasion it did for Joly B who had five winners on the day to not only win the âcontestâ but put himself into the top ten in the standings.

Day XV A warm sunny day at the Spa got off to an explosive start when Lady TNT blew up the opposition in the opener. However due to a late scratch of her coupled entry she was running for place money only and you would have had to be Into Mystic ($4.00) to have seen that coming. It appears after Saturdayâs binge our group was suffering from a hangover Sunday with no one having a Master Plan ($12.00) . Indeed we would have entered the Realm ($27.20) of total abject failure but for Shoes coming up with some American Power ($5.70) in the seventh race. Letâs hope we can parcel up some winners today to help pay the bills !

Day XVI A hot sunny day at the Spa saw a paid attendance of figure of 34,288 for the free umbrella giveaway (I got 6 and racked up 10,000 steps going in and out of the track to get them ! ) That was not the only Bon Raison ($6.60) to be there however and BigRed1 chalked up another winner when Therapist ($2.70 ) pulled it altogether in the second. The big score of the day however went to a true long shot player Ponygirl who was just Bustin to Be Loved ($40.20) in the sixth. Moral of the story is : any time you can get 19-1 on an Irad Ortiz horse take it with both hands ! On a rather quiet day before the big sale the only other contestant to ferret out a winner was former champ and pp provider Ziggy with Eloweasel ($20.80) in the eighth.

Day XVII After a couple of nights of post sale parties normal service on the front porch has finally been restored. Fortunately for me there was not a lot to report about on Wednesday so please Factor This ($9.40) in while reading. Itâs been a rather wet Sumner ($5.30) in Saratoga which has affected field sizes and handle but at least Trapshot was feeling Ailish ($7.20) on the day. Coincidentally this time last year Gallant Bob got in a World of Trouble ($5.40) with that Wild Colonial Boy ($8.60) Cherokee Scot and on this occasion they combined to get the last two winners on the card.

Day XVIII Eighteen days in and I feel I am stuck in a Time Warp ($12.60) with little change in the contest leaderboard. Still it seems that none of us have had enough of this Malarkey ($6.40) yet and Maumeeriverangler keeps nibbling away at GAM with yet another Surface Strike ($3.10) in the third. Joly B and Spiderjohn also had their bankrolls fortified when Ticonderoga ($3.00) won like a 1-2 shot should in the sixth. Pink Twist ($4.40) was a well named winner on Fabulous Fillies day while despite running green Goodbye Brockley ($5.60) came steaming home to dash several hopes in the eighth. Finally in the surest bet of the day 1-9 favourite Cherokee Scot won the best dressed man in pink for the second year in a row and will shortly be heading to Vineyard Vines to add to his already colorful wardrobe .

The Fabulous Fillies Day celebration included the second annual "Best in Pink" fashion contest, which invited fans to wear their most fashionable outfit - prominently featuring pink - for the chance to win a special prize package valued at approximately $2,000.
Holly Michaelson of Delmar, NY, who was also one of the breast cancer survivors recognized in the winner's circle in association with To Life!, was declared the winner of the women's category, while Bev Hendry of Ocala, FL, was the victor among men for the second consecutive year. Both received a $500 vineyard vines gift card; $500 in vineyard vines merchandise; and a 750 ml bottle of Moet & Chandon rose champagne.

Day XIX Temperatures cooled down at the Spa on Friday making it a very pleasant afternoon for the 31,221 in attendance but not so pleasant for our contest handicappers who had a rather tough day at the track. Triguy got off the mark thanks to Amazing Audrey ($4.60 ) in the second race while Ten Furlongs and PedalCar shared Two Shakes ($6.00) later in the afternoon. At least Hezethebest can take some pleasure from the day as Veterans Beach ($20.60) proved to be a tour de force in the finale.

Day XX Its raining again in Saratoga but the precipitation did not stop thousands of fans making a super tramp to the track to get their breakfast in America this morning. Hopefully the traffic wonât be too bad at the end of the day so they wonât have to take the long way home. In the opener Prognostication ($4.80) was the logical choice and won to give a little bit to her backers. After a hyperlapse of judgement in the first Cherokee Scot decided to become a Unionizer ($19.40) in the second which paid benefits. Sueâs Fortune ($9.10) showed a Bitowisdom and was Cruzan at the end to take the Third. Eye 123 may be a dreamer but he is not blind and still has his eye on n the prize after Cairo Cat ($38.40) had the purrfect trip to upset in the fourth.

Day XXl After a deluge on Saturday night (which did not stop some people in Siroâs dancing to the Elvis impersonator) the second half of the meet began with a familiar OFF THE TURF notification from NYRA causing further scratches and short fields which certainly suits our hallway leader GAM. Indypacer was the first to Take Notice ($6.90 ) of the track conditions and slot home the winner of the opener. Sadly no one tagged Brucia La Terra ($20.00) who was the longest price winner of the day and the Feedback ($7.40) seems to be that contestants are waiting for some bettor weather before using up their picks. Indeed BadActor had a Tricky Escape ($9.70) when he decided to cancel his selections but Big Red 1 was not deterred and decided to Call Paul ($3.70) instead. I am sure that Bitowisdom was expecting a much bigger return from Sippican Harbor ($5.60 ) in the finale but the off the turfer saw the field decimated again.
