Get to cross Sunland, Turf Paradise, and Oaklawn off the bucket list beginning this Friday. Any UIC members that might be in the vicinity are welcome to a pint. I’m guessing Tims70ar might be at Oaklawn on the 31, 1 or 2?

Nice trip! Got time to throw Louisiana Downs into the mix? I see it's only a few hours south of Oaklawn Park.

Rob already has me booked on a 10 seater into Hot Springs...I can’t imagine what gets me into Shreveport 😀
The original plan called for Sam Houston and Delta but we couldn’t make it work in the allotted time. Have to leave those for another day

First leg of the tour is done. Sunland is a nice facility with a newer hotel attached to the casino and racetrack. Hotel has a nice little patio where you can sit and watch morning training with a cup of coffee. Weather was perfect. First 3 or 4 races each day were quarter horses followed by the thoroughbreds. There is quite a lot of New Mexico bred races as the state has a pretty lucrative program for the locals. As far as the betting product goes it is a little tricky as a lot of off track money shows up at the last minute. Here are a few pics. 1) Quarter horse start from the hotel patio Attachments:

At risk of violating the no politics rule but Sunland is not far from the border which you can see from the front of the hotel. Makes an interesting picture. Attachments:

Day 1 at Turf Paradise was a real eye opener. We spent the morning wandering the backside connecting with trainers who may want to come up to Canada in the summer. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. The backstretch area holds a lot of horses and while the barns are old and run down they are open to the fresh air and I suspect the horses are very happy in them. The plant itself was opened in 1956 and it an old school racetrack. Lots of room, many different options for where you want to watch the races. It is showing its age but you can see that in her day she was probably quite a sight to see. The paddock area is unusual as it is at the front of the grandstand. The racing itself is right up my alley. Cheap maidens, NW2 or 3 claimers prevail. I have grown up with that kind of racing and find it way easier to decipher than a field of allowance horses coming from 6 different tracks. I suspect when we get to Oaklawn I may be in deep water. Anyway here are some pics from Day 1 Attachments:

Keep up the pics Mac and gl. The paddock at Calder(now Gulfstream Park West) is set off in front of the stands and to the right, about midway between the finish line and the first turn. Used to be nice, they had a good cafeteria with great pea soup and Stevens chowder. I'm not sure what's going on there now as far as fan amenities:)

Interim Day 2 post from TuP....
Canadian based trainers have won races 2,3&4. Small Mac has been in 3 straight win photos. If you watch the live feed he is the large guy in the blue shirt.
As Jay Trotter says “I’m having a very good day”
Tim - email me at kmac1470@outlook.com and we will make plans to say hi on Friday.

Any luck with the recruiting so far? Love the pictures. Always enjoyed playing the races from there. Bad horses often equal good prices and when it's cold and dreary on the east coast, it's always nice in Arizona.

Day 3 saw yours truly sleep in and let Rob finish up his Century Mile work on the backstretch this morning. I took the 40 minute walk over to the track later in the morning which let me see the main entrance. Attachments:
