Great one PonyGirl. Had forgotten The Firm. Hope others post their faves. So many good ones out there in many genres.

A working definition might be in order. My instant thought is a combination of musicians who came together after already achieving notable success as a part of other groups?

Oh David Crosby is playing in Annapolis. I had too much money tied up in other shows so I had to pick between David and Martin Barre and his band. A couple of other original Tull members will be joining him.

when by definition a group becomes a 'super' group? King Crimson's Discipline version of Levin (Peter Gabriel +), Bruford (Yes), Belew (part of too many great bands, starts with Zappa ... I had the pleasure of seeing Adrian with Bowie) and Fripp corrals a group of talented musicians. Discipline was going to be the new band name but instead they decided Crimson should live on.
Merriweather Post Pavilion used to have series subscriptions so you got the same seats to see 3 to 5 bands. You then owned those seats for that series next season (or opt to move up which got me to 10th row dead center) Crimson was in my series so was interested. I'd call it the concert that most exceeded my expectations. I already loved Bruford and Levin but somehow I'd never heard of Adrian. They blew me away.

Thanks shoes.
But again what is a 'super' group? Now this suggests instability in a group but I also think of Crimson as super because of bands that grew from departing members and present members playing with others. You could say that's a negative but if the group is STILL making records in the 21st century, that kind of says something about the band, their fans. Robert Fripp should be in the Hall.
Ian McDonald leaves

Love the whole rock group genealogy thing tracing the comings and goings, the new formulations, new groups. I actually have a book that does this but the print is so small I need strong reading glasses to peruse it. (Rock Family Trees, author Pete Frame).
edit.
As an example, I just pulled the book out and found a link between King Crimson and Roxy Music in the form of bassist/vocalist John Wetton who was with King Crimson July 1972- Sept 1974 and with Roxy Music August 1973 -June 1976 and then for a few months in the first incarnation of the Bryan Ferry Band.

Ok Bruford, one that joined Crimson playing with YES again minus Squire aka ABWH or the rest of YES. Kind of funny but Tony Levin took Squire's places until he got sick.
and the jazzy Bruford post Crimson

LOL shoes but was just looking at Wetton. He must have been a good fill in on bass ... Uriah Heep.
Roxy Music
In early 1970 Ferry had auditioned as lead singer for King Crimson, who were seeking a replacement for Greg Lake. Although Robert Fripp and Pete Sinfield decided that Ferry's voice was unsuitable for King Crimson's material, they were impressed with his talent and helped the fledgling Roxy Music to obtain a contract with E.G. Records.
John Wetton played with them live in 74-75 and I was surprised .... here you go, ty Youtube

Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Mark O'Connor and Edgar Meyer---5 incredibly talented musicians(who play on many songs in your collections) formed this group a long while back and released one lp. I have 2 copies signed by all of them. Have spent a fewdozen evenings since, listening to each of them in various combinations and endeavors.

and from a couple of years ago, this amazing combination called Goat Rodeo, featuring the much traveled Chris Thile, Yo Yo Ma(who only plays off sheet--doesn't jam), Stuart Duncan(who doesn't read music) and Edgar Meyer again. They did one cd followed by an incredible tour.
