Thanks for posting. Buddy Holly and the Crickets were oldies music by the time I got into music- roughly 1959. My first familiarity with the song was the Stones cover which was pretty good I thought. This version contains a humorous if clumsy introduction by Mike Douglas:
I did go back and check out Buddy Holly's body of work in 1964 and again a few years later, an important influence on music.

I've been to Lubbock many times and seen the museum and statue of Buddy Holly. Just saw a documentary that revealed some facts I did't know. Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that flight but lost a coin toss to Richie Valens for the last seat seat on the small plane. The museum has the black horn rimmed glasses as a prized artifact from the wreckage.
