--Jockey Matt Garcia was suspended seven days (Dec. 26-Jan. 1) for twice weighing in more than one pound under his assigned weight on Sept. 14 and 15 at Los Alamitos. One day he weighed out (before) at 122 pounds and weighed in (after) at 120. The next day, he weighed out at 123.8 and weighed in at 121.6. When jockeys weigh out they do not have safety equipment but when they weigh in they do have that equipment, which accounts for about 2-2.5 pounds, which would make the discrepancy even greater. Garcia says he weighed out with a wet chamois and heavy girth channel but they were gone when he weighed back in. Matt Nichols, clerk of scales, said those items are not permitted at weigh out and that he did not recollect Garcia having those items anyway. A jockey can get away with being underweight by less than a pound.
