As this year’s contest draws to a close with Propro a clear winner it is time to open the contest for 2019 where a $100 Otis Special awaits the winner as well as the name on the trophy to follow Propro in 2016, Cherokee Scot in 2017 and Propro again in 2018.
Here are the rules of the 2019 contest.
1. Players must select 3 horses in January 2019 running in claiming races that month - to be eligible the horse MUST be in for a tag 2. Players will have a bankroll of $100k No credit is given for any unused bankroll but you cannot go over the limit. 3. No two players can claim the same horse , so first person to make the claim gets preference. Claim must be made prior to race. 4. To be eligible for selection the horse must be making its first appearance of the year in January ( this makes scoring easier) 5. Winner is player with highest earnings according to Equibase. Players will be expected to keep their own scores and post updates. 6. Earnings count for the whole calendar year including the first race that you make the claim so it’s important to get off to good start
Any questions should be posted in this thread
Good luck.

Bev, thanks for putting this on again in 2019. I'm in. This has been a fun contest to play. I can see that timing is everything for the real owners in this game that claim regularly and it can be tough to eek out a profit on many of these.

thanks....just going with the top trainers this time...i take it , it can be at any track the horses, claimed that is ...so divide 100 k by three and it comes to approx. 33 thousand per horse on average...hhhhmmmmm....yup , my grade 1 / 2 math is still remembered....so now to go find a few back class horses with top trainer and jock combos...and get the list of tracks open for betting in jan. at the earliest dates....lol...good luck folks...hhhmmmm ,espec. horses that ran at better tracks and just were not up to snuff....

That’s the spirit BP, strike early and lead from gate to wire. My concern about selecting from Optional Claiming races is that from my experience they are normally won by horses that are not in for a tag. I wonder if there are any stats on this to prove or disprove my understanding.

Good question indeed....I find that horses put in for a claim try harder when the former trainer / owners know that thier horse is being claimed before the race runs ...way back when many a horse owner would put thier horse in a claiming race near the end of a tracks session so they would give some one else the fed and overhead bill, lol...then reclaim the horse a s a p when the next season began, lol or a s a p soon after if the horse was worth anything...but then ,I noted that when a good horse is given up by owners or stables, they tend to run another of thier horses in a race where theirs was claimed etc and beat the one claimed since they trained together with same...etc...and even try and reclaim same again...depends on the rules of the game which changes all the time track by track...but there were some behind the barn fist meetings because of this in years gone by, etc...and on track troubles etc .....happened all the time way back....but if the public odds went way up on any claimed they would suddenly really try all that harder ,to win , perhaps because the owners etc want to get a final payoff on claimed horse...lol....at the public trough, lol...so it goes...also remember when some waited till their claimed were in shape to reclaim same etc ....it is a very tough game for the novice...remember a young fellow had a trainer claim a very good horse with his life's savings and the horse was not in top shape but for some reason was made to run as if he were and the horse dropped dead in the stretch , so perhaps the former owners ran for the high odds...the young man was in tears for a long time etc...I had bet the horse in other races ....so it goes...it is another version of a " fixed race " so to speak....lol...of course , trainers and owners try to find races thier horse can compete with and move them to tracks programs for same...another way was for trainers, and still is done, to give thier horse a good conditioner with ' fill in horses ' that are the bane to horse bettors, which are not noticeable in the pps lines ,and thus, other horses showing poorer pps ,win races at good odds , lol...this happened all the time when woodbine closed and greenwood , in the final four weeks of the session their would have horses come from Fort Erie and win races agianst woodbine horses with much better pp lines, lol...and the American horses would come over also and one could always count on them winning...Esspec. when the horses were born and trained in the u s of a and raced there ...the American horses were claimed up a s a p...way back when...possibly for breeding etc...

Welcome aboard Phlier. Coincidentally your final pick was bred by next door neighbors in Ocala. I remember him as a foal , his barn name was Molasses.

I'm surprised no one is interested in Salsa Queen out of todays 2nd at Gulfstream for the bargain price of $12,500. The eight year old mare tries to break her maiden in her 42nd try. Hey....I think she has a shot...lol Happy New Year

Bev, I noticed that your Picco Uno was scratched out of Race 7 at the Big A today. Sorry about that. That makes me ask for a rules clarification. Is Picco Uno still yours, or does the scratch void the claim and place her back into the public domain?

The scratch voids the claim so she is open if she comes up again. I’m not surprised about the scratch as she looked very undervalued at $40k being a multiple graded stakes winner . She would be worth more than that as a broodmare .

No question about her having strong residual broodmare value. And, even as an 8 year old, with just a little class relief this gal probably still has some run in her, especially in races for New York breds.
